A Letter To…

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

To my unborn child

I always want you to know
Daddy will love you
No matter how hard
He has to try for you.

I don’t know how ready the world is to have you
But apparently your ready to be here
I hope you are here to save me
And help me along the way
Someone to tell me they love me
And mean it everyday.

A reason to wake up in the morning,
I’ve nearly ran out of them.
I’m sorry to bring you in
On these conditions
Everything must happen for a reason
And “God”s bringing me a gift.

A new life
A new start
A new me
And a brand new you.

“Path of Darkness”

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

“Path of Darkness”

Down this path of life
I lost you somewhere along the way
Now it’s dark
I can’t see you
Or even feel you anymore…
you’ve slipped away.

Down this path of life
You lost me somewhere along the way
I was always right behind you,
but you got too far ahead.
I tried to catch up,
but you were already out of reach
The lights turned off
And the world became dark.

Down this path of life
I lost myself
I was left alone…
and didn’t know what to do
I was scared, but I couldn’t hide
The sky went black,
my eyes went blind,
darkness surrounded me,
when you left me behind

Upward Bound

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

It was interesting to see that someone had googled “Matt Henrickson + Poetry“. Well if you were looking for me, you found me. After checking the same results, I found another website with my name on it. It is an angelfire website about Brandon Vigil. He was a friend I grew up with since I was about 5. He was murdered in 2003, and I wrote a poem for him and his family when I was 16. I want to share that here.

Upward Bound

Words won’t come out in the way I want them to
No words can describe you
I know you wanted so much more here
And what you accomplished will remain clear
We didn’t get a goodbye
But when we cry
It’s tears of love for you
After all you’ve been through
All I can believe is your struggle has come to an end
I will always think of you as more family than friend
What keeps me sane is the thought of you in a better place
With that smile on your face

It was a privilege to have known you
And to grow up with you
And to look up to you
You weren’t the Brandon that was here not too long ago
You were the Brandon when we shared our first hello
When we all would play football in the street until dark
Or when we played baseball all day at the park
Or when you became my hero and taught me to ride a bike
It’s hard to think back to what you were like

You will be in my prayers tonight

I hope you made it to heaven all right

Rest In Peace

BRANDON CHRISTOPHER VIGIL
March 25, 1985 – January 21, 2003

“In loving memory of Kim Walter’s 17 year old son Brandon, who was tragically found on the roadside, brutally murdered.

This wonderful poem was written by Brandon’s childhood friend
Matthew, age 16 years. Kim wrote how it is such a beautiful dedication, of how Brandon touched his life.

She will cherish it always.”

Tell Me…

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

“Tell Me…”
Written October 16th, 2007

Tell me you’re listening
Tell me you can hear me
You’re suppose to know what I’m thinking
Tell me that you know
Tell me that you understand how I feel
Tell me that you feel it too
Tell me that you know what to do
Tell me that everything is okay
That everything will be fine
Tell me that you aren’t going anywhere
And heal my insecurities
Tell me that I’m the one
Even if I’m not
Tell me everything that I want to hear
Even if you don’t want to say it.

Same Old Me

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

“Same Old Me”
Written October 16th, 2007

Struggling as always
Holding myself together.
For you, For us, For him
Drinking it, so I don’t crack
Trying my best not to let the bad, back.
Changed what I did best, now it’s truth
No longer filled with lies.
Life has me filled with guilt
If I deserve what I got,
What happened and what’s coming.
This time, it’s the stress to succeed
That’s wearing me down
The stress of life,
That’s slowing beating me.

Is my best going to be “good enough”?
AM I?

My Heart is Yours

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

“My Heart is Yours”

How does it feel to be my other half?
You wash i dry
Your ying my yang
Wax on wax off

You’ve become the other part of me
That I’ve been missing
You’ve become the other part of me
That I’ve never had

My heart has been yours
Do with it what you want
My heart is yours
Please don’t break it
My heart has been in your hands
Love it
Like I’ve loved yours
I’ve been yours
Now be Mine

Imperfectly Perfect

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

Imperfectly Perfect

Your imperfections are perfect to me
Any mistake you make
Is my own.
If in fact you are wrong
I’ll forgive you always.
When I’m mad at you,
I’m even more mad at myself.
I give myself to you completely
You are my world,
The ground I walk on
And the light showing me the way.
You are the reason I awake each day,
Since you are my life.
A perfect human being,
Only one exists
That happens to be you
And no one else.
Why is this true?
Because I’m in love with you.

Flowered

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

Flowered

My heart like a flower
Wilting as its been picked
The petals falling off
Losing these petals
As my mind is lost
Crumbling into nothing
Like my soul has become

Once beautiful in a happy home
Smelling of sweetness
Blowing in the wind
Watered daily showered with rain
Healthy in a perfect world

The water has run dry
Beginning to die
Falling apart at the stem
Not feeling the love
In its garden
With its friends

Wilted
Petal less
There is nothing left,
But to crumble

All For One

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

“All For One”

And now I’ll watch you leave again
This time I’m waving
I’m tired of not being good enough
I’m sick of being second and third to them
My ears are shut and I won’t listen
It started to hurt too much
Your words like needles
Piercing my heart
Now I know it wasn’t me you cared about
It was only yourself
You chose not to risk us
You chose to save you
And left me
To fend for myself

Goodbye to Hello

Matthew Henrickson Poetry

“Goodbye to Hello”

I guess this is goodbye
Not for always
Just for now
Until… you’re ready
Until you need me
Now is the time we need to part ways
But I know we will be reunited again
We have to…
For my sake
For our sake
I wish you the best
While we are apart
But I had to let you go for now
I know you will come back
Because I’ll always be here
Waiting for you…
Waiting… for the bad to pass
And the good to reign once again
For us to once again
Exceed all expectations
And be happy
Until then I will miss you
Just secretly
Until then I will want to be with you
But I won’t tell you anymore

So this is my goodbye
Until… its hello again.
